haiti-earthquake-peoplejpg-d659963c2ae6ab12_large.jpgThe death toll from this week’s massive earthquake continues to mount with some experts predicting the number of deaths in the tens-of-thousands, maybe even reaching as high as one-hundred thousand.  All across the Internet we are hearing of relatives searching desperately for their lost family members and friends.  Information continues to gather giving witness to the massive devastation to a country already suffering from an economic and healthcare earthquake.  As my prayers were gathered and lifted this morning, my thoughts could not drift away from my brothers and sisters in Haiti.  If we don’t help them, who will?

Yesterday, I began an attempt to raise much needed resources for the relief effort currently taking place within Haiti.  Working alongside Baptist World Aid, the social arm of Baptist World Alliance , we are collecting revenue to be directly sent to two organizations based in Haiti: the Baptist Convention of Haiti and Haiti Baptist Mission.  The funds will be directly used to offer assistance for victims of the earthquake, providing long-term care for those displaced by this tragedy.  Again, if we don’t help, who will?

Finally, every one of us has painfully shaken our heads watching the images coming out of Haiti.  Emotions and thoughts run deep, as we try to comprehend what we are seeing and feeling.  Many of us want to help, but are not sure what to do in this circumstance.  There is no doubt in my mind, if this tragedy occurred 2,000 miles north in our home country, citizens would be coming out of the wood work to help.  Friends, we now live in a global community.  What happens in Haiti effects us all.  As Jesus rightly pointed out, everyone is our neighbor.  Therefore, will we be the Good Samaritan of Jesus’ story or the religious elite who walked by a fallen victim?  If we don’t help, who will?
